Fit 5 On Friday: What your Pump Alarms are Trying to Say

Audible-Alarm-TypesI will be writing a post next week on my journey back to paying attention to the fact that I have Type 1 diabetes…given that T is almost 6 months old, I think it’s about time to remember I have a second child I need to pay attention too; Little Miss Diabetes (even with her attitude and all, she deserves attention).

I have been getting all kinds of alarms on my pump lately, and today I actually laughed out loud thinking how they are all trying to tell me something.  My musical idol, Jewel, once told a story during one of her live recorded concerts about how while she had been living in her van when trying to get discovered, she was reading the philosophical self-discovery book by Robert Pirsig ‘Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance’, and referenced how when things are going wrong with something physical right in front of you, maybe it life trying to tell you something.

5 things your insulin pump (and CGMS) alarms are trying to tell you about life:

  1. Weak Signal: You’re spread so thin that you can’t focus enough attention on any one particular thing so you put half-ass effort into everything and anything… like your diabetes.  Time to fix that.
  2. Lost Sensor: This one is self-explanatory; you’ve lost all your senses and you’re off your rocker.  Stop and look around you; feel the breeze, enjoy the carefree smile in your child’s face, really take a good whiff of that glass of Pinot and completely ignore the static of negativity around you.  Go ahead, try it (you need to put your phone down in order to do this).
  3. Low Reservoir: Your running on empty, trying to squeeze every last unit or energy out of yourself; continually looking at the status screen and ‘units left’ to see how much further you can eeak it.  If all you’ve had before noon time is a giant latte; force yourself to drink 16 oz of water, eat a piece of fruit, and go for a walk, even if it’s around your work building.  Recharge.
  4. Low Battery: This one is also self-explanatory.  However, when you continually ignore the low-battery warning, and you wake up in the middle of the night to find a blank screen, it’s no fun searching for a AAA at 2am.  Be prepared without stressing.  Your diabetes is as much a priority as using your turn signal when driving.  Choose one day a week where you take the time to re-stalk your diabetes kit in your car/purse with test strips, batteries, juice boxes, and oh, maybe even a clean lancet if your feeling really organized!
  5. No Delivery: This is a ‘come-to Jesus’ moment.  You’ve hit rock bottom. You can’t remember when you’ve last changed your site, your so burnt out from trying to do it all that you’ve even forgotten to take out your old infusion set never mind change the one that’s connected to your tubing, in over 3 days.  This is bad, very bad.  It’s time to get back to basics and remember that in order to be it all and do it all…you need to be around!

I hope that this little play on words when it relates to what your pump alarms are trying to tell you about life has helped you smile today, and think that it might be time to recharge!

PS – Hitting suspend will only prolong the inevitable 🙂
